Since the climate change debate has also become entwined with
the discussion on the energy generation and consumption, it is important
that we uncover the truth behind generating energy from waste
that is being pushed by incinerator and landfill industries as green and
renewable. We see the 2007 GDA as an opportunity to raise our concerns
on waste and climate change by organizing build-up activities preceding the
UNFCCC (COP 13) on December 3 to 14, 2007 in Bali, Indonesia.
The working theme for the 2007 Global Day of Action against Waste and
Incineration will be "Zero Waste, Zero Warming: Dirty Technologies Will
Not Clean the World." By "dirty technologies" - we mean landfills,
dumpsites, incinerators of all types, cement kilns burning
wastes. Studies show that waste prevention, reduction and recycling can
result in big energy savings since the demand for raw materials extraction
is reduced.

GDA 2007 will draw attention to the need for safe and sustainable
alternatives to end- of- pipe waste management processes that will
genuinely reduce generation of greenhouse gases, promote conservation
of our diminishing resources and protect human health and the
environment from further toxicity.
Participating groups are provided with the flexibility to organize activities
according to their campaign priorities. If November 28 does not work well
with you, you definitely have the option of picking another day in November
until the first week of December that will suit your local priorities and
circumstances.

To join, please fill up the form at:
< http://www.zoomerang.com/recipient/survey- intro.zgi?p=WEB226YWANR5M6 >
For additional information and/or comments, please email Gigie Cruz at
< gigie@no-burn.org >

There are dozens of meaningful and creative activities that groups can
carry out. GDA activities will depend on your present campaign thrusts,
resources and time. The extent of your participation and the amount of time
you put into the GDA is totally up to you. Some examples of the many
activities that you can do during the build up and observance of the
GDA:
* issue press release or send letter to the editor
* appear in TV/talk over the radio on waste concerns particularly on the
connection between waste and climate change
* dialogue with government departments in charge of waste management,
climate and CDM issue
* talk to your country´s delegate/s to the United Nations Conference on
Climate
Change - COP 13 and CMP 3
* convene public meetings to raise awareness and promote concerted
action
* arrange public debate on waste and climate issues
* organize non-violent direct action
* hold picket, rally and other protest assemblies
* stage street theater or drama on waste and pollution
* submit petitions to ministries or funding institutions
* launch a cyberaction/cyberalert
* organize a recycling/Zero Waste exhibition

AND MORE!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
In the spirit of information sharing, we would like to encourage everyone to
send relevant information for GAIA's information database, please email the documents
to < One can also have them unscented, but some brands tout scents like lavender and baby powder. There are sanitary napkins with green tea, while others boast of additives such as aloe vera and vitamin E. Recently, a Chinese company launched a sanitary pad that it says contains anions, which purportedly decrease bacteria and even gradually eliminate dysmenorrhea.

Modern sanitary napkins have come a long way since the days when women would try to contain their monthly flow with thick pads of cloth. Yet for all the innovations manufacturers of sanitary napkins have come up with to ease women’s discomfort during "those days" of the month, they seem to be stumped by this challenge: producing a practical yet eco-friendly sanitary pad.

Environmental groups like Bangon Kalikasan Movement (BKM) say the mountains of trash in dumpsites like Payatas in Quezon City contain a very hefty share of soiled baby diapers and used sanitary napkins. The trash in Payatas has piled up to a towering 50 feet, equivalent to five stories. Seven years ago, a thousand people were killed when the trash came tumbling down on scavengers and those living in huts near the steaming mounds of garbage.

BKM convenor Annette Papa believes that the first environment is the person, and that people need to take care of themselves so that they can take care of the environment outside their personal space. Yet while women are usually active participants in green movements, few of them seem to realize that a product they buy month after month isn’t eco-friendly at all.

It’s bad enough that the disposable sanitary pad is for single use, which means more pressure on resources that are vital to its manufacture, aside from more waste headed for the dumpsite. The cover of the modern sanitary napkin, whether net-like or nonwoven, is also made of plastic, as are the bottom layers. Most napkins these days are packed individually in plastic, too, and then sold in multiples, which are, yes, in plastic packs. Plastic is nonbiodegradable. In dumpsites, says Papa, it contributes to toxic emissions, especially when mixed with heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury. These emissions, which are mostly dioxins and furans, are carcinogenic, and can also cause tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases.

Mixed garbage produces methane gas as well, which Papa says contributes to global warming. In addition, plastic trash often clogs canals and waterways, thereby contributing to floods.

Its plastic components and no-fuss application are what make the modern sanitary napkin so convenient for today’s multi-tasking woman. But women’s studies professor Dr. Sylvia Estrada-Claudio says that once she became aware each time she threw away a sanitary napkin, she was generating nonrecyclable trash, she ceased to see disposable sanitary napkins as "convenient."

Environmental lawyer Ipat Luna also points out that it isn’t only the plastic in disposable sanitary napkins that’s harmful to the environment. "All the energy that would go into production, not just the pad itself, but the plastic, the waste material from the production process, the delivery – it’s a very wasteful cycle altogether," she says. "And it’s unnecessary. And when there is something to replace something that is unnecessary and that replacement is easy, it’s a no-brainer."

The most common "replacement" for the disposable sanitary napkin, of course, is the pasador, or those folded pieces of cloth that women a generation or two ago used whenever they had their monthlies. Luna says she began using a commercial version of the pasador – ordering a set of washable, 100-percent cotton napkins from the Internet – when she started to become irritated over the fact that she needed to throw away her sanitary pads. Six and half years later, her washable napkins are still in service.

"I hardly throw anything out, so ‘pag ganyan na araw-araw may tinatapon ka, nakakasama ng loob eh (when there’s something you have to throw out every day, you feel bad)," she explains. "And then you know that other people are grossed out by what you throw away, you have to wrap it up. It just wasn’t jibing with the rest of my lifestyle."

Besides, she says, it wasn’t as if she was satisfied with her disposables. "There are environmental choices where it’s harder to make compromises on, but this one for me was easy, because to begin with, the product is horrible to me," says Luna. "(Disposable sanitary napkins are) just badly designed – they bunched up, they leaked, they scratched. And even this wings thing, they don’t help. They don’t conform to the contour of your private parts, so they just don’t work."

Great Perseids on Sunday

Great Perseids
from the NASA website
Got a calendar? Circle this date: Sunday, August 12th. Nextto the circle write "all night" and "Meteors!" Attach the above to yourrefrigerator in plain view so you won't miss the 2007 Perseid meteorshower."It's going to be a great show," says Bill Cooke of NASA's MeteoroidEnvironment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "The Moon is newon August 12th--which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors."How many? Cooke estimates one or two Perseids per minute at the shower'speak. The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle. Although the comet isnowhere near Earth, the comet's tail does intersect Earth's orbit. We glidethrough it every year in August. Tiny bits of comet dust hit Earth'satmosphere traveling 132,000 mph. At that speed, even a smidgen of dustmakes a vivid streak of light--a meteor--when it disintegrates. BecauseSwift-Tuttle' s meteors fly out of the constellation Perseus, they are called"Perseids."Note: In the narrative that follows, all times are local. For instance, 9:00pm means 9:00 pm in your time zone, where you live. The show begins between 9:00 and 10:00 pm on Sunday, August 12th, whenPerseus rises in the NORTHEAST. This is the time to look for PerseidEarthgrazers- -meteors that approach from the horizon and skim theatmosphere overhead like a stone skipping the surface of a pond."Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful; they are among the mostbeautiful of meteors," says Cooke. He cautions that an hour of watching may net only a few of these--"at most"--but seeing even one makes the long nightworthwhile. As the night unfolds, Perseus climbs higher and the meteor rate willincrease many-fold. "By 2 am on Monday morning, August 13th, dozens ofPerseids may be flitting across the sky every hour." The crescendo comesbefore dawn when rates could exceed a meteor a minute. For maximum effect, Cooke advises, "get away from city lights."The brightest Perseids can be seen from cities, he allows, but the greaterflurry of faint, delicate meteors is visible only from the countryside.Scouts, this is a good time to go camping. And there's a bonus: Mars. In the constellation Taurus, just belowPerseus, Mars shines like a bright red star. Many of the Perseids you see on August 12th and 13th will flit right past it. Instead of following the meteor, youmay find you have a hard time taking your eyes off Mars. There's somethingbewitching about it, maybe the red color or perhaps the fact that itdoesn't twinkle like a true star. You stare at Mars and it stares right back.

2007 Moonrise Film Festival

WATCH THE 2007 MOONRISE FILM FESTIVAL

I used to be part of last year's Moonrise film Festival which was the biggest so far. Writers Jessica Zafra and Marjorie Evasco, sculptress July Lluch, filmmaker Ellen Ramos, visual artists Steph Palallos and Wawi Navarroza, and dancer Myra Beltran will take part in Queremos tanto a Frida – Mahal namin si Frida, a series of cultural events covering the month of July. All activities will be held at the Instituto Cervantes premises.
Frida Kahlo, an artist and feminist icon, is well-known for her self-portraits which depicted her emotional pain and physical suffering through symbolism. In the last decades, she has gained the respect of the artistic world and even become a popular figure for the public, resulting in several movies about her life. One of the best films about her is Frida, naturaleza viva, which was directed by Paul Ledouc in 1984. This film will be shown at Instituto Cervantes on July 6 at 6 pm.
Later in the day, Jessica Zafra will be reading her article "Contra Frida Kahlo" to the public. Her article is a criticism against the media's portrayal of Frida Kahlo. On the same day July Lluch will present her Bust of Frida. There will also be a photo exhibit by Wawi Navarroza entitled "Abducted", which will feature her photographs influenced by the figure and work of Frida Kahlo. Another interesting display will be the wire sculpture by Steph Palallos, which is based on Kahlo's self-portrait, "The Two Fridas" (1939). This self-portrait depicts the fragmented side of her personality – the traditional Mexican that Diego adored, and the more modern "European Woman."
On July 14 Marjorie Evasco and Nityalila Saulo will be presenting a joint-performance inspired by the great artist.
One week later, on July 21, Ellen Ramos will be presenting a film inspired by Frida's most surreal work, "What the Water Gave Me". In this video, the water literally becomes a reflective surface where the real and imagined merge.
On July 28, the Frida Kahlo month will come to a close with Myra Beltran premiering her piece "Frida before the Mirror." Beltran will be juxtaposed against images of Frida Kahlo's paintings. As the dancer writes her emotion with her body's movements, constricted due to Frida's physical disabilities, she also writes her body into canvas, just like Frida's inscription of her body in her work. This symbolizes her liberation as an artist and a woman.
To complete the tribute to Frida Kahlo, the Embassy of Mexico and Instituto Cervantes will present Mexican Cinema in the times of Frida Kahlo, a film cycle of films produced during the last decade of Frida Kahlos's life. The cycle comprises four films directed by the movie industry giants Emilio Fernández and Luis Buñuel: María Candelaria (1944), Víctimas del pecado (1950), the classic Los Olvidados (1950) and A Woman Without Love (1951). This cycle is genuine proof that Mexican cinema had a prestigious past way before the rise of directors like González Iñárritu ( Amores perros, Babel), Cuarón (Y tu mamá también) and Guillermo del Toro (El laberinto del fauno).
The centenary of Frida Kahlo's birth will be celebrated not only in the Philippines but also worldwide. In her native country, Kahlo will be honoured with the largest-ever exhibit of her paintings at the Museum of the Fine Arts palace, which will be Kahlo's first comprehensive exhibit in Mexico. Works will be on loan from Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Nayoga, Japan. The exhibit will include one-third of her artistic production, as well as manuscripts and letters that have not been previously displayed.
Mahal namin si Frida is organized by Instituto Cervantes, with the collaboration of the Spanish Embassy, AECI, and the Embassy of Mexico.

Instituto Cervantes855 Kalaw St., 1000 Ermita ManilaTel. It conjures the clean trajectory a bullet takes before finally lodging in a mass of flesh. The exhibition tutoK perspeKtiba subverts this common association and adapts it as relentless protest, fearless inquiry and unwavering stance. “perkspeKtiba”, on the other hand brings to fore the multiple lenses by which art initiates dialogues among various audiences. Works in the exhibition engage the issue of human rights highlighting the steadily rising spate of extra judicial killings in the country.

tutoK perspeKtiba stresses art’s entrenchment in life and the fundamental role of the artist as initiator of relevant engagements with pressing social concerns. Works in the exhibition take on varied forms. Disappearances and silences are disrupted in various modes - to make strange the familiarity of violence and to make apparent the state’s anxiety over an increasingly threatened social order. The works employ different modes of questioning – some use the sheer number of multiplied elements, others disrupt one’s sense of scale while still others use cues such as sound and shadows to evoke the veiled threats on human rights in the country. All are attempts to make sense of the futility of representing violence and its multiple reverberations. Taken together, they encourage a mode of awareness, challenge and reflection.

Locating art in the midst of life’s pressing concerns, tutoK perspeKtiba seeks to counter the ‘numbing of humanitarian impulses’, to paraphrase Appadurai (2006:5). Perhaps, this kind of ‘numbing’ is the more dangerous outgrowths of violence. The passive acceptance of repression further entrenches violence as a ‘normal’ recourse of everyday life. Devoid of the rights to assert and question, we cease to exist and become mere pawns in a game not of our making. The exhibition then becomes a ground from which inquiry can sprout and a forum form where discussion can emerge. It takes on different paths, including installations, media art, performances and lectures. Art is presented here as evolving process, constantly redefined by its encounters with multiple audiences. The many perspectives provided by the works further emphasizes the endless resource that art offers in its capacity for inquiry and change. It is underlined by a conceptual questionasked by line producers Jon Red & Carol Bunuan-Red:"How do you see the past 20 years?"In 2006, IMAHE NASYON attempts to answer the question. That question also became a thematic and uniting thread across thefilms, but each film is made of different cinematic genres that isrepresentative of the filmmaker's style, stressing the concept that inspite of individual visions we share the same goal: to depict atruthful image of the nation. The omnibus project was conceptualized by Jon and Carol incommemoration of Edsa 1, a political revolution that changed theirgeneration forever. It is also a celebration of the struggle andgrowth of Philippine Independent Cinema which, in essence, is acultural revolution only now gaining public acceptance.A unique and common element in IMAHE NASYON is rising Indie actor PINGMEDINA who is featured in all the 20 films. He represents the nextgeneration who will play a crucial role in the direction of the nationand its image.

Imahe Nasyon was directed by Poklong Anading, Emman Dela Cruz, YeyeCalderon, Neil Daza, Lav Diaz, Tad Ermitaño, Mes de Guzman, Rox Lee,Topel Lee, Milo Paz, Robert Quebral, Ellen Ramos, Raymond Red, R.A.Rivera, Lyle Sacris, EJ Salcedo, Sig Sanchez, Dennis Empalmado, OgiSugatan, Paolo Villaluna

REGULAR RUN ON FEB.21-27 AT THE indieSINE ROBINSON'S GALLERIA

There's a Typo on the Bench Billboard

ever noticed the bench billboards on edsa lately? i don't care how much money was spent on in putting up this campaign and how "influential" the people who were photographed to pose for a "cause" are, i care about what their campaign means. I cannot even begin to elaborate how irrelevant the entire ad campaign is for Aklat Sisikat, a non-profit endeavor promoting literacy by establishing access to books and libraries for children. i never realized that this was their intention until i read John Silva's comment. i've often wondered what Wear your Consience meant everytime i had to ride the train along EDSA... i never saw the very tiny logo of Sa Aklat Sisikat right below the ass (yes, literally) of society's well to do.

There's a Typo on the Bench Billboard
by John Silva

When companies attempt to make Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) a breathing, living ethos, they should be congratulated and encouraged on. But since the CSR movement is relatively a nascent undertaking in the Philippines, companies whose bottom lines have long been on profit taking rather than on social giving, have applied CSR with some hits and misses.

Take Bench’s current marketing and advertising campaign entitled “Wear Your Conscience.” It’s a social awareness campaign with Sa Aklat Sisikat Foundation, an organization raising reading levels in school children, as beneficiary. The tagline is witty, but the concept, execution and results are way off the mark.

Bench recruited celebrities to pose in their polo shirts with logos suggesting “Conscience.” The celebs were the usual Bench stable like Richard Gomez and Lucy Torres, and Kris Aquino and they added socialites and celebrities who’ve graced the slick covers of Tatler and Metro. The photographs, taken by Jun de Leon are all fine technically.

There are celebs who affect a smile with genuine warmth, others more saccharine, some slightly vapid and a lot more of them raise the question, how do they merit having a conscience? That’s the first problem. Bench’s choice of celebs and the pictorial context they are in doesn’t inspire one to ponder social change. Many of them actually excel in charitable works. But in this context, posed with shirts, devoid of their advocacies, these celebs only epitomize Bench retail iconography, or fashion mag cover material, eclipsing the social concerns they may be involved in. A few of them have long too often been snapped, ad nauseam, at product launches grinning ear-to-ear with the latest SwatchVolvoTiffanyFerragamoMcDonalds that no matter what Mother Teresa undertaking they’ve accomplished, the burger gets top-of-mind recall.

Their poses are disconnected to the campaign. Some of the photographs are posed en famille, more fitting in silver frames and resting on top of grand pianos. They make good Christmas cards. But utterly fails as a call to action.

When Bench decided to bring the campaign to the billboard realm, festooning their heartfelt faces on the main highway EDSA, they blew it even further and unfortunately, may have blemished the recipient organization.

Link to Article to continue reading

i'm temporarily out of order

one

step at a time to enlightenment

photos by Chema Madoz

with

my wandering pandit

Om Shanti. I wish we could say "we feel your pain" but we can't really, only imagine it.

I am tempted to say you have already made history; that at least, you got one convicted, at least you got a trial, at least you precipitated a crisis, at least… But that is a cop-out. Filipinos have been trained to live on the “at-least” level. I hear it all the time, from exported Filipinas: at least, you have a job; at least, you’re in the US; at least, you can send money home; at least, your “amo” [master] is kind; at least… It’s become our prime and only virtue: survival by whatever means, under whatever conditions. I hear it often from women who work 18/7 to enable parents, siblings and various relations to continue to exist in an archipelago so wealthy it’s globalization’s paradise.

There are no words of comfort to make up for this travesty, to you and to millions of Filipinas living lives of quiet desperation. The Philippines ranks fifth in the world in the number of women working. The first four are all Western developed nations, like Sweden, Denmark, etc. It is a painful irony that a country dependent on women’s labor does not have the political will to defend, protect and assert one woman’s right to redress of grievance.

Bullet Lights

Archis.org has launched a blog about the architectural consequences of war. The blog, called Unbuilt, serves as a platform for dialogue and sharing ideas for reviving the city and land after (and often still in) conflict.

Edwin Gardner reflects about the presence of bullet holes in the buildings of Beirut. He looks at bullet holes from a different perspective and proposes a concept where the holes are replaced by lights. The idea is to reverse the meaning and experience of bullet holes and to introduce unexpected poetic moments of beauty, ambivalently mixed with the physical testimonies of violence.

It's probably not very realistic that such concept will materialize in a city where people have basic needs to worry about (survival, water, electricity?) but the idea is very beautiful and a lot more captivating than many of today's dark memorials and similar symbolic representations.
